Fresh Perspectives from the Heart of the Carpathians

Hidden away in the tranquil surroundings of the Loussiana Inn in Valea Doftanei, a unique transformation took place between June 13th and 20th, 2026. While the world outside moved at its usual pace, a group of dedicated youth workers from nine European nations gathered in the Romanian wilderness to dismantle old habits and build a new vision for local activism. This was CivicLab—not just a project, but a testing ground for the future of community engagement.

The experience was defined by a shift from passive listening to active creation. From the very first roadmap sessions, it was clear that the "lab" environment would push us to our creative limits. We spent hours diving into the world of visual facilitation, discovering how a simple marker and a flipchart can become powerful instruments for change when used to simplify complex social issues. This creative energy was then balanced with a deep dive into the digital frontier, where we explored the intersection of youth work and Artificial Intelligence, seeking ways to make our organizations "smarter" and more responsive to the needs of the digital generation.

The true test of our progress came when we left the comfort of the training room. In the streets of Brașov, we engaged in a civic mapping challenge that forced us to look at urban spaces through the eyes of a citizen-activist. This practical approach reached its peak in the town of Campina, where we had the chance to facilitate a laboratory for local high school students. Witnessing their reactions and gathering their input was a reminder that our work only has value when it resonates with the young people we serve.

As the sun set over the Carpathian hills each evening, the focus shifted to the bonds between us. Whether it was during the NGO market, where we swapped organizational secrets, or during the intercultural evenings filled with national specialties, we were building a foundation for future European projects. We didn't just exchange business cards; we co-created project ideas that will eventually bring new opportunities to our own youth back home.

Our time in Romania concluded with the development of rigorous, personal action plans designed to ensure that the energy of CivicLab doesn't fade. We left Traisteni with more than just memories and a Youthpass certificate; we carried home a renewed sense of purpose and a sophisticated toolkit of digital and visual methods. The lessons learned in that mountain village are now ready to be put to work, transforming our local communities into more vibrant, inclusive, and active spaces.
